The Science and Technology/Engineering Department offers a 4-year pathway in Biomedical Science. This program began in the fall of 2015 and follows that as it is designed by Project Lead the Way.

Students in this pathway take the following courses, one each year, beginning as freshmen.

Grade 9: Principles of Biomedical Science

Grade 10: Human Body Systems

Grade 11: Medical Interventions

Grade 12: Biomedical Innovations

Requirements for the Biomedical Science Program indicate that students are expected to take grade level appropriate mathematics and science classes each year concurrent with this pathway's courses. Biomedical Science classes do not replace biology, chemistry, or physics classes. Students looking to go into a biomedical career need these sciences as well. Also, please note that all students must take and successfully pass the Science and Technology/Engineering MCAS exam in Biology as a requirement for graduation.

Additionally, it is expected that this program will connect students to courses and experiences that promote career exploration and readiness. Biomedical Science Staff will work collaboratively to create an instructional program that is rooted in project based learning and that which fosters partnerships with professionals that will expand on the opportunities for Plymouth students. 

In order to be considered for acceptance into this program, interested students must complete an online application.  Selection criteria include scholastic achievement, attendance, school behavior, and recommendations from the student’s current Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principals, and Team Teachers. Applications are reviewed and selections made accordingly. Students may only apply for entrance into this program during the eighth grade. There is no wait list and late applications are not accepted.

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the Plymouth Public Schools offers the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program annually to children entering grades K-6. It’s an exciting, week-long summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation. Children work together to seek solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st-century learning skills while rotating through several fascinating modules. Usually, the program runs the full week after July 4 from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm daily.

Local educators facilitate the program modules and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns ensuring that one program team member is in place for every eight children.  All activities give participants the opportunity to explore, discover and achieve while having fun!

The annual Elementary Robotics Rally takes place in March. Students in grades 4 and 5 from across the district gather at Plymouth North High School for this exciting event, which extends well beyond most robotics competitions. Here, students present a solution that they've created with LEGO equipment in response to a given problem.  Students present their solutions on stage in front of a live audience. 

In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in many events happening throughout the evening including, but not limited to programming mice to move through a maze, investigating with a wind tunnel, completing coding challenges, and touring the high school engineering facilities.  The rally is the culminating event of a 10-week enrichment program that occurs in every elementary school.

Students from both Plymouth North and Plymouth South High Schools are encouraged to complete independent science and technology/engineering projects.  Students who complete projects and who are eligible may enter regional and state competitions, such as the annual South Shore Regional Science Fair held in March and/or the Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair held on the first Friday and Saturday of May each year.
